Manchester is a popular tourist destination in the Greater Manchester county of England. It claims to be the second largest city in the UK although this is strongly disputed by nearby Birmingham. In fact, officially it is listed as the UK's third largest urban area. Citizens of Manchester are referred to as Mancunians and have their own very individual accent.
There has been a settlement at Manchester for hundreds of years and it is one of Englands oldest inhabited places. The city came into its during the industrial revolution and has many fine buildings that are testament to that era. With its canals and textile mills Manchester became famous for its industrial output.
Manchester is a vibrant student city with excellent architecture, culture and music scene. It is famous for its Chinese Quarter, comedy clubs and gay area. There really is so much to do and see in this great city. With world class restaurants, bars and entertainment venues the city of Manchester is a great place to spend a few days and explore. People around the world know Manchester through its world famous football teams Manchester United and Manchester city.
