Whitehaven

This is probably one of the most under rated towns around the coast of Britain. Due to its close proximity to the Sellafield Nuclear Plant many tourists might be put off by paying a visit to Whitehaven. However, they are missing out on this little gem of a town.

Originally named Whitehaven due to it being the 'haven between the white cliffs', this small fishing village in 1600 grew to become the second largest port in England. Today Whitehaven is a tourist destination and its shipping has moved to larger ports such as Liverpool and Bristol.

The Beacon shown here in the photo provides an interactive experience of the history of the area through the ages.  Some great views of the harbour from this 5 floor lighthouse.

Take a stroll down the pier to the lighthouse. This impressive structure is well worn by the wind and the sea but provides impressive views of the harbour and the town. A good place for those that like fishing too.

Whitehaven is a must if you are visiting the Lake District. Spend some time here and include it in your tour of Cumbria. You will be glad that you paid it a visit.

Keswick

Keswick is one of the main tourist attractions in Cumbria. It is centrally placed but it is also near to Derwent Water which is one of the main lakes in the Lake District as well as being one of the most popular.

Keswick is without doubt a picturesque town with some wonderful traditional shops and good restaurants. Surrounded by lakes and mountain ranges this is a great place to get away from it all and put your feet up and relax. During the day visitors can take a stroll around the lake or venture out on more strenous walks and by evening experience the vibrant little town and all it has to offer.

Keswick is the home of the world's first graphite pencils and there is a pencil museum here at Keswick as well as the world's largest pencil.

Derwent Water

Derwent Water is fed by the River Derwent and is very popular with tourists to the Lake District. The lake is approximately 4 km long and around 1.5 km wide. A feature of the lake are the islands of which one is inhabited with tenants of the Derwent Island House, a property of the National Trust.

Walkers will love this lake and for those that wish to take a more leisurely look around there are plenty of boat trips or opportunities to hire your own boat for exploration.
